James Turrell Can Make Your Hotline Bling

By now its safe to say everyone has seen Drakes polarizing music video in which he dances around a beautifully lit, modern art seeming setting while his tropical billboard hit plays. Some people hate it, some people love it, some people are just glad Drake is making lame dances look and feel cool.

I personally thought it was cool (minus the intro in which it seems like its going to be an early 2000's type girl focused video). I loved the wide shots and the lighting that happened to match the upbeat sound of the song.

After looking into it, I learned that Drake was actually a big fan of James Turrell, an artists whose world renowned installations look VERY similar to Drakes video. I will admit I don't love the way Drake seems to bite so many styles (recently had a run in with DRAM as well for Hotline Blings song) so I thought I would highlight some of James' beautiful work and share some music I think pairs with his aesthetic even better than Mr. Aubrey Graham.

James Turrell focuses his art on light and space. He has his BA in Perceptual psychology which is the psychology of perception. He is an incredibly interesting guy with fantastic taste and I encourage you to take a look at his work on his site JamesTurrel.com.
