Hip Hop This Week Minus Drake
Yea, drake, cool, we get it.
Here are some tracks that dropped this week that I have in heavy rotation.
Topaz Jones - Tropicana
I first came across Topaz Jones in 2013 from his music video for a track called Coping Mechanism where he has FLOWS for days. He was way young then too but I cant figure out how old he is now. New York City based, awesome style, great track that just got reviewed by pitchfork. check it out.
Jake Lord x Kydnice - Finer Things
Lately its been all about bright trap beats and good vibrations. Think Complex classified Lil Yachty as "bubblegum trap" and I kinda like that term. Beats are getting more and more upbeat. Jake Lord is a talented artist (in all regards) from Connecticut and Kydnice is more or less a nomad. Regardless they were able to link up for this. Check the track out, have a feeling its a summer track. Need to give it the car test.
Charlie Heat & Mir Fontane & Ish Williams - Wanni Wag
Charlie Heat! The guy that made FACTS better on Kanye's album! Well I have never heard the original of this track but I bet I like Charlie Heats version of this more too. Tracks hard.
ILoveMakonnen ft Lil Yachty & Skippa da Flippa - Loaded Up
Lil Yachty murdered the MET this week and then big brother Makonnen gave us this. Makonnen rapping and not singing on this is nice. I really tried to hate Makonnen for a long time before realizing I was being a hater and Makonnen radiates positive energy. Affiliating with artists like Lil Yachty and Ugly God makes this a full blown "happy trap" movement birthed by artists like Gucci Mane and Lil B. I like this more than thugger and I cant help it. Favorites out the south.
Pouya - Billy Mays
Truthfully this is not my mood ever anymore but I like to try to listen to everything and this track (entire project to be honest) brought real aggressive energy. Artists hate to be compared to other artists but the easy comparison is early Tyler the Creator. Check this out and break something in your apartment or whatever.
