Meet Big Quint: A Lesson On Appreciation

Youtube reviewing is not new by any means. It seems the moment people realized we could film our opinions and post them to the internet we wanted to do it. I have watched DeadEnd, The Needle Drop, Spectrum Pulse, and others review music in a typical and technical form which often comes across as a reviewer preaching their opinion as fact. (That being said these guys are all music nerds that do know music and are worth checking out)

Sometimes things hit you in a way you really would not expect. Reviews don't evoke any emotion from me typically but I'll never forget coming across Big Quints review for Good Kid Maad City.

Pure honest energy. Pure love of hip hop. I came across Big Quint and recognized a genuine ability to give things a shot and to go into albums with an open mind ready to appreciate the effort and art that went into making something.

Watching Big Quint can convince you to give an artist a chance or relisten to an album you loved. He reminds you of what its like to be genuinely happy listening to music and that's why with each video Big Quint is getting thousands of more followers to his YouTube channel

I got a chance to ask some questions to Big Quint recently but first I wanted to share some of my favorite videos of his. PROMISE you will enjoy this guy.

First reaction of Yeezus...... Watch to the end......Enjoy.

You review a lot of hip hop albums but you can tell with the way you get excited during some producers sample work that you probably have roots in other genres, what did you listen to growing up other than rap?

I love all kinds of music because I listened to all genres growing up.  When I was a kid I would listen to mostly gospel, blues, classical, opera, jazz, reggae, New age, R&B, neo-soul and of course hip hop.  Once I got old I started to realize that I have a great appreciation for all music. I still found time to listen to many different genres of music that I wouldn't normally listen too since my dad is very diverse when it comes to his taste in music.

What albums this year did you really love on first listen that you found yourself not going back to again?

If I really love an album, I find time to go back to it and give it another listen.  If it's an album that I thought was just OK or average, then I might not listen to it again...  I'm more likely to not like an album on first listen, and then like it more the second or third listen.  Once I love an album, my mind is set.

Who are two artists that you would like to see work together?

The Weeknd and FKA Twigs would make an insane album.

What albums are you anticipating the most right now?

Swish - Kanye, Views for the 6 - Drake, and Frank Ocean's Album whenever that drop in the year 2020 or 2050.

I bet you get sent a lot of music, has anyone ever sent something that you listened to and actually really liked?

Yes that has happened! This two artist come to mind.  Just Incredible (I believe of LA Leakers) and Wesley Yanks.  I was really impressed by their work.

Any artists you feel aren't getting the attention they deserve?

One artist that is really slept on is Big Krit. Dude is so real and does not get enough attention in my opinion. Another artist JMSN which has been on of my fave for the last couple of years.  I don't think I even came around to doing a reaction video to any of his project.  I hope to fix that on his next project.  Dude's vocals are dope and his production is too.

Have you ever considered doing an episode with a go-pro in a car and giving an album a ride test?

Yes I've been planing out a reaction like that!  I've be trying to get my hands on a go-pro forever now.  I hope to have one very soon.  Live reaction just might happen.

Big Quint is changing things. He brings positive vibes to the art of reviewing music and I think that it is wildly under appreciated. When he doesn't feel a song he says HE doesn't feel it. He doesn't say its bad. That is important.

Learn from Quint. Dance with Quint. Laugh with Quint. And remember...You're supposed to enjoy music.
