Big Year in Creativity: The Magician
Fellow COE member, Akeem, has been raving about a DJ/Producer named The Magician all year. I have seen Akeem vogue to his mixes on Snapchat for too long not to check him out. There is no doubt that The Magician has a specific sound that mixes UK garage, house, and nostalgia to make you want to dance a lot. He has been making music and releasing mixes now for a few years but hes one of the artists COE feels had a BIG year creatively and so we are featuring him in our "Big Year in Creativity" series.
Akeem....take it away.
I’m a pretty unique guy when it comes to my interests. I’m a fan of professional video games (Let’s go Team Solo Mid! We signed a pretty big player for our League of Legends North American Team), all genres of music, anime, various sports organizations(New York. Know that), traditional and modern styles of dance. I can go on and on but you get my point… I like a lot of things. the team/person/artists that give me something unique and to their core believe in their craft/purpose to the extent that they never stop growing and progressing are usually the ones that grab my attention. This year my musical interests have danced around, melted to the sweet nectar, built itself back up with the healing sounds of Anjuna, but have continuously come back to my main man The Magician.
So much credit goes to my homegirl, OG, for putting me on last year. After listening to the first of his Magic Tape series I was blown away by his funky timewarp back to summertime in the 90s. I couldn’t hear a Magic Tape and not feel obligated to dance or… when he drops that Boston Bun – Paris Groove… make the stank face while my entire office stares at me.
But why The Magician? Every Magic Tape and Magician show I’ve gone to see has been an event of nonstop dancing, smiling, loving life, asking OG, “Yo track number X, ARE WE KIDDING?” or “Did he really sample, x? Where does this man get the inspiration from?” He really just has mastered his own sound. He’s had an incredible year of tours globally, especially here in the U.S., if you were fortunate enough to catch him. And what makes me excited is you can hear it in the sets. Start back at Magic Tape 45 and take the journey to 57. Or if you want the fast-track do 45, 47, 50(birthday edition: he just gets too sexy, I still can’t handle it), 52, 57. You’ll get the first hand experience of how his sound continued to solidify into the work of art and unique sound hes come into over this year.
Magician, Kudos to you man, happy I joined the ride in the last year and excited for what should be an amazing 2016 for you.
Also check out his label potion records, cast of awesome producers if youre really digging this sound.
Happy December!
